‘Ami Sirajer Begum’ to ‘Kadambini’: Much anticipated TV shows which couldn't live up to the expectations

Many Bengali television shows have reportedly failed to impress aam janata despite setting high hopes in the beginning. Some of these most-anticipated shows are high budgeted while some had an interesting story or heavyweight stars. But the shows couldn’t spell magic and had to go off-air in the recent past. Here are a few of those… (Photo: Facebook)

Kadambini

The very first promo of the show created a lot of buzz among the audience; thanks to its cinematic essence. Actress Ushasi Ray played Dr Kadambini Ganguly's character while Manoj Ojha essayed Dwarakanath Ganguly's role in this show. Yet another show ‘Prothoma Kadambini’ was launched by a rival channel based on the same story. It stars Solanki Roy and Honey Bafna as the lead pair. Ushasi starrer ‘Kadambini’ couldn’t show its wonder despite having a strong cast, well-researched story and crisp narration. The TV show based on Dr Kadambini Ganguly's life was launched in July and went off-air in October. ‘Prothoma Kadambini’, however, is still on-air.

Durga Durgeshwari

Sandipta Sen and Gourab Chatterjee starrer ‘Durga’ was quite a trend setter back in 2008. ‘Durga Durgeshwari’ was said to be the sequel of ‘Durga’. But a strong cast, sheer nostalgia by featuring Payel De and Swagata Mukherjee (who were the part of the original show) and a drastic change in the story and cast couldn’t show its wonder. The show starring Sampurna Madnal and Biswarup Bandyopadhyay went off-air in July before completing one year.

Aloukik Na Loukik

Actor Prosenjit Chatterjee made a comeback on television as a producer after a long time with this show. ‘Alaukik Na Loukik’, which had a fresh cast in the leads, narrated new stories every weekend. The stories featured actors like Sabyasachi Chakrabarty, Lily Chakravarty, Subhasish Mukherjee, Tota Roy Choudhury, Prosenjit himself and many others. Legendary actor Soumitra Chatterjee also played a meaty role in this show. ‘Aloukik Na Loukik’ grabbed the attention with its cinematic essence and crisp narration, too. But the TV serial couldn’t show its wonder on the TRP charts.

5/8

Nojor

The Bengali version of Monalisa starrer ‘Nazar’ couldn’t show its wonder on the TRP charts. It marked the television comeback of Sampurna Lahiri but reportedly failed to impress the viewers.

6/8

Ekhane Akash Neel

Rishi Kaushik and Aparajita starrer ‘Ekhane Akash Neel’ stole a million hearts with its sweet and romantic story. The makers chose to recreate the magic, having Sean Banerjee and Anamika Chakraborty in the lead. Though Sean and Anamika enjoyed a huge fan following on social media, many of the TV viewers felt Hiya-Ujaan’s story in the original version had a magical touch. Leaving many of young admirers of ‘Hiyan’ upset, the show starring Sean-Anamika went off-air.

7/8

Ami Sirajer Begum

The period-drama was one of the most ambitious projects Bengali television has seen so far. From the budget, set, cinematic effect, costumes to the cast- Ami Sirajer Begum had it all. But the Sean Banerjee and Pallavi Dey starrer show couldn’t cast its spell on the TRP charts. Prior to its end, the production house related issues made things quite complicated and ‘Ami Sirajer Begum’ ended its journey almost abruptly.

Super Family

The non-fiction show featured none other than Priyanka Sarkar as a host. Priyanka’s TV comeback made quite some noise ever since the first promo went on-air. But the show couldn’t match up to the expectation, TRP report suggests. (Photo: Facebook)
