Eminent author Samaresh Majumdar breathed his last on Monday evening. The 79-year-old writer, who was honoured by many prestigious awards including Sahitya Akademi Award, was not keeping well for a long time. He was suffering from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) for almost 12 years and hospitalised in a critical condition for a month. Yesterday (May 8), his condition deteriorated and the eminent author breathed his last in a private hospital in Kolkata.
His last rites will be performed today. The news has left his numerous readers completely shattered. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed grief terming it as an ‘ irreparable loss to the literary world’.
‘Uttaradhikar’, ‘Kalbela’ and ‘Kalpurush’ were some of his best literary creations and considered as modern classics. His novels, set against the backdrop of Naxalite movement, beautifully portrayed sociao-political picture. On the other hand, Arjun Samagra has been an integral part of many young kids during their early teens. The news of Samaresh Majumdar’s
death has deeply pained many of his readers who grew up reading his books. Actor Rahul Dev Bose is also among them. He says, “An entire era of our greatest writers is slowly leaving us and while it hurts in its own way, they are immortalised through their work. Samaresh Mazumdar was perhaps one of the last doyens of the golden era of Bangali literature. He will be remembered through generations to come.”
Besides Rahul, many other artists have expressed grief over the loss.
Born in 1944, Samaresh Majumdar grew up in Jalpaiguri district. He did his post graduation in Bengali literature from University of Kolkata. was also honoured with Banga Bibhushan Samman and Bengal Film Journalists' Association among others. In 1967, his first story was published in a reputed magazine and eventually, he made a permanent place in the hearts of his readers. Many of his creations have been adapted for TV shows and movies. ‘Bunohansh’, ‘Arjun-Kalimpong E Sitaharan,’ were based on his creations; while ‘Deepabolir Saatkahon’ was adapted for a TV show.
