Karan Jotwani: I was so immersed in my role that I slipped into depression
Karan Jotwani aka Saahil from Aap Ke Aajane recently opened about battling depression. In an interview to BT, the actor shared, "From October to December 2018, I went through severe depression. It happened because I was so immersed in my role that I could not switch off. During that time, the show’s track introduced a new character, who marries the woman I love. So, I had to portray intense emotions and just glycerine does not work. An artiste needs to feel those emotions to enact them well on screen. When I would return home after shooting from morning till night, I would not be able to sleep. People suggested meditation, but that requires focus and if you haven’t slept for days, how will your mind focus? I did not sleep for weeks! That’s when I realised that I had to seek medical help. The doctor prescribed medication and slowly, as the track became a little less emotional, I started feeling better. I am grateful that the makers and the channel gave me enough time to recuperate and bounce back."
TV celebs who have suffered from depression
Abhinav Kapoor, who is currently seen on the show 'Internet Wala Love', told BT in an interview that he suffered from depression for two years, which forced him to take a break from work. He shared, "Those two years were the most difficult phase of my life. I became complacent, I stopped going out and meeting people, I even stopped thinking about work. I isolated myself from everything and everybody. There was no financial stability and my parents were disturbed because of me. It took me a while to get out of it. Finally, when I realised that I was losing out on time, I invested time in myself. I started grooming myself and spending time in the gym. I transformed my body in a healthy manner. When I returned to acting, I became more experimental. I did theatre and also started reading more. Today, I am not only happy because I am doing the work I want to, but also because I am happy within. One thing that I have learnt is, we must always be positive, no matter what life throws at us. The way we look at a situation can solve a lot of our problems." (Photo: Instagram)
Harshita Gaur
Harshita Gaur, whose last show Sadda Haq made her extremely popular, reveals that she suffered depression after it wrapped up. She says, “I refused to get out of my house for days and also stopped meeting people. I did not share my issues with anyone, including my parents, because I had to first admit to myself that I was going through such a bad phase. I also stopped responding to calls and text messages. Nobody could help me till I realised that I had to accept the reality — that my career in showbiz was not going forward. Then, I consulted a therapist and stress management consultant. I do not mind admitting that I was overconfident post 'Sadda Haq', which was probably why I was in such a state. After meeting the therapist, I overcame my fears. I also realised how it is important to live in the present. Today, I live each day like it’s my last. I can say that I am the best version of myself.”
After almost a year of struggling with depression, Harshita says that she is in a better space now. “I am happy and relaxed in my space now. I meditate for 30 minutes every morning and before sleeping at night, which helps me remain calm and composed. It also gives me the strength to think positively. I have been out of work for one-and-a-half years, but I feel inspired and motivated now,” she shares. (By: Tanvi Trivedi)

It wasn’t just about being out of work, but I was also facing difficulties on the personal front. I was suffering monetarily and was clinically depressed. I also realised that there are no permanent friends in this industry, more so when you hit a rough patch. Friends who would stand outside my home, requesting me to party with them, distanced themselves when I wasn’t doing anything. However, I am fortunate to have a supportive family, especially my wife Jhanvi and brother Vishal, who helped me sail through. Vishal was by my side while I was fighting to come back and my wife is my driving force at the moment.” (Photo: Instagram).
