Word to the wise: Liulichang is a fabulous spot to purchase Communist kitsch such as pins, bags and a few propaganda posters with angry soldiers and diligent farmers. Don't forget to negotiate with flair.

Just south of Tiananmen Square lies Liulichang Culture Street, offering a vast array of ancient Chinese cultural artifacts, such as books, calligraphy, handicrafts and paintings.
The boutiques recall ancient Imperial architecture, and just next to the street lies a traditional area of hutongs. Stroll around this rather small market and absorb the traditional Chinese culture that permeates the area.
