Torcello Island is a small and scarcely populated island which is renowned for cheap souvenirs and some surprising architectural gems. The island has a long history and was a prosperous town when Venice was still a veritable backwater.
The Santa Maria Dell’Assunta Cathedral speaks volumes about the island’s former glory with its gilded Byzantine mosaics which are good enough to rival those in the San Marco Basilica in Venice. You can also visit the neighbouring Santa Fosca Church and learn more about Torcello’s past in the small Archaeological Museum which displays items from ancient to Roman times. In order to enjoy the natural beauty of the place, head to the Casa Museum Andrich and book a guided tour to the educational farm and also take a look at the museum’s extensive collection of artworks.
While visiting Torcello it’s also worth taking time out to dine at the famous Locanda Cipriani restaurant, but make sure that you reserve your table well in advance.
