Vietnam flash flood situation: Trekking halted due to destructive landslides

In a recent update, Vietnam has halted trekking due to a devastating flash flood in northern Vietnam. The flood has destroyed an entire hamlet, which has claimed 22 lives and dozens missing. The catastrophic flooding was caused by the aftermath of Typhoon Yagi. The region is also a prominent trekking destination of Sapa. The non-stop rainfall and frequent landslides have severely disrupted travel and transportation in the area.

Given the flood situation, several roads in Lao Cai have been blocked, which has hampered both rescue efforts and travel. As a result, all trekking activities in Sapa have been suspended. Local tour guides, including Van A Po, have reported that the severe weather conditions have made it impossible to continue with planned treks.
Apparently, a torrent of water surged down from a mountain in Lao Cai province, and flooded Lang Nu hamlet, where some 35 families were living. It buried the region in mud and debris, and only a few survivors are left. The impact of Typhoon Yagi and its subsequent effects has been severe. The majority of these fatalities and injuries have occurred due to flooding and landslides, particularly in the northwestern province of Lao Cai, which borders China.


Authorities are advising travellers to stay updated on weather conditions and adhere to local safety guidelines. The situation remains fluid, with ongoing efforts to manage the crisis and support affected communities.
