Tokyo Olympics: 10000 domestic spectators to be allowed, despite warnings

Tokyo 2020 Olympics organisers have capped the number of spectators at 10000 domestic spectators, days after experts opined that hosting such an event without fans would be the least risky option during this time of crisis. Overseas spectators have been banned from attending the event.

The said announcement puts an end to months of speculations and shows determination of Japan to go forward with the Olympic games amid public opposition and concerns regarding resurgence of COVID infections.
Now, up to 10000 spectators, i.e., up to 50 per cent of each venue's capacity, will be allowed to witness the games as per the rules laid out by the ICO and the Japanese government.
As per the latest rules, visitors in the arena will be required to wear face masks at all times, whereas shouting or speaking in a loud voice will be prohibited. Spectators will be required to leave the venues in a staggered manner, whereas all of them should travel directly between their homes and the arenas without stopping anywhere else en route.

Reportedly, although spectators have been limited to 10000 people, VIPs, students from school groups, those from corporates have not been included in that count. Also, sponsors, and delegates, who are considered ‘organizers’, have also not been included in the spectator count.
Reports have it that the said decision was expected after some organisers made some recent comments, and after the government's own medical experts appeared resigned to the event going ahead with fans.

However, the said limit could be further reduced after July 12, based on any state of emergency introduced, or other anti-infection measures, the organisers added.
