COVID-19: Kaziranga National Park to welcome tourists from October 21

Kaziranga National Park (KNP) in Assam will open its gates to the visitors from October 21, after staying closed from March 2020 in the wake of the ongoing Coronavirus crisis and the monsoon rains.

The announcement to reopen Kaziranga National Park & Tiger Reserve was made by KNP on its Facebook page. It wrote that the national park and tiger reserve will be opened for October 21, 2020. Furthermore, the opening ceremony will start from 11:00 AM onwards in the benign presence of the Chief Minister of Assam. Kaziranga National Park draws a large number of tourists from India and abroad due to its population of one-horned rhinos. The Government of Assam had sanctioned a proposal to increase the dimensions of the park in September 2020.

Kaziranga National Park is situated in Golaghat and Nagaon areas of Assam. There are about 2500 one-horned rhinos in this park which amounts to two-thirds of the global one-horned rhino population. It was acknowledged a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985. It was also tagged as a Tiger Reserve in 2006 for its large population of tigers.
In September 2019, it was also announced that Kaziranga National Park will get the longest flyover in India as long as 35 km. It will be made over National Highway 37 which passes through Kaziranga National Park in order to protect the wild animals from being hit by vehicles.
