Ro-Ro car ferry service between Mumbai and Alibaug resumes today

The roll-on/roll-off (also known as Ro-Ro) car ferry service resumed today morning between Mumbai and Alibaug. On the very first day of its resumption, 100 passengers and 30 cars were booked. The first Ro-Ro ferry service from Mumbai to Alibaug was launched in February, but then the country went into strict lockdown given the COVID-19 outbreak. But now the ferry is back to transport people.

Before the introduction of ferry services, it used to take nearly 3.5 to reach Alibaug from Mumbai by road but now it takes less than 60 minutes. However, given the current situation, the M2M Ferries operating between Mumbai and Alibag will have limited operations with reduced capacity as a precautionary measure.
According to a spokesperson, the operator won’t take more than 300 passengers and 60 cars booking. However, the ferry service operator has a capacity of nearly 500 passengers and 145 cars. Not only this, the service will be available only once everyday (to and fro Alibag).

On Wednesday, M2M Ferries issued a statement which said, “In light of the current times, M2M Ferries has taken considerable precaution to maintain the health and safety of passengers, crew, ground staff and the other support staff on-board as well as at the terminal through their #SailSafe initiative.”
As of now, passengers are allowed to access all decks but to maintain social distance protocol, they’ll be seated across the eight sections. The ticket price of the Ro-Ro ferry is INR 300 per person.
