Australia’s charming Fraser Island has now been renamed as K’Gari

Australia’s beautiful Fraser Island has now been renamed. The island has been given its Aboriginal name, which is K’Gari. The island is the largest sand island in the world, and is located off the coast of Queensland.
The Aboriginal name K'Gari means paradise. The island belongs to the Butchulla people, who are also the guardians of the land. They have been living here on the island for thousands of years. On September 19, a smoking ceremony was held at the Kingfisher Bay Resort to celebrate the renaming of the island.

The old name Fraser is from a Scottish woman, Eliza Fraser, who was shipwrecked here in the 1800s.
Butchulla Native Title Aboriginal Corporation’s Kate Doolan, said, "On behalf of the Butchulla people we pay respect to our Elders who are no longer with us to hear this news. Today is a time of reflection for our people and for those souls who long advocated for such a meaningful change over such a lengthy period of time."

Australia has been renaming its destinations, and reinstating the aboriginal names of places. Such as Ayers Rock, which is now known as Uluru. Also, Moreton Island in Queensland is now called Gheebulum Kunungai National Park Mulgumpin.

Fraser Island is a magical destination, a sandy beauty that is quite surreal for most part. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Fraser Island is home to dingo dogs who are protected. Exploring this island is like returning to the beginning of time.
