Madras High Court permits New Year celebrations in Puducherry amid Omicron

The Madras High Court has allowed Puducherry to go ahead with the New Year celebrations. However, the court has imposed restrictions on the sale of liquor. The court has said that liquor should not be sold from 10 PM (December 31) to 1 AM (January 1, 2022). Only those resorts and restaurants with a special liquor license will be allowed to serve alcohol on the New Year celebrations.

Recently, two cases of Omicron variant were found in Puducherry. But the court has permitted New Year celebrations amid strict COVID-19 protocols. To keep a check, the Union Territory will make various teams of health, revenue, and police officials who will personally monitor the celebrations.
The health department has been asked to conduct random testing and if anyone is found symptomatic, he/she will not be allowed to enter the celebration venues in Puducherry. The Puducherry administration has planned a three-day grand celebration for New Year 2022.
As per reports, tourists from India and even abroad have already reached Puducherry as all the hotels are fully booked. The biggest and much-awaited event will be organised at Old Port for three days which are December 30, 31 and January 1.

As of now, only 2000 to 3000 guests would be allowed entry for the programme. There will be live music performances and dance shows as well.
