Cyclone Freddy makes landfall in Madagascar; Mauritius airport resumes operations

As per the recent reports, the Tropical Cyclone Freddy, on Tuesday, made landfall in Madagascar around 8:30 pm. However, this does not mean that everything is back to normal. Authorities have warned that several life-threatening impacts of the cyclone, such as storm surge, floods, extreme winds and lightning, may follow.

Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport in Mauritius was shut on Monday following a major cyclone alert. After the lifting of the cyclone warnings, the airport reopened on Tuesday.


However, a number of flights to and from Mauritius have been rescheduled or cancelled. So passengers are advised to check the status of their flights or contact the concerned airlines for the most recent flight update before heading out to the airport.


If reports are to go by, access to the check-in hall at the airport will be temporarily restricted to departing passengers.



Cyclone Freddy’s journey from Australia, towards Madagascar and other surrounding islands, was an unexpected one and even a bit unusual as per the meteorologists. Even though the cyclone moved towards the north of the islands of Mauritius and Reunion, it was touch-and-go for the two islands.


The last deadly cyclone to wreak havoc in the region was the Cyclone Batsirai of February 2023.


As per reports, Cyclone Freddy is not done yet. The cyclone is most likely to proceed towards Mozambique by later this week. If reports are to go by, the region may have to face Cyclone Freddy’s second landfall.
