If reports are to go by, around 3.8 hectares of land will be used for this ambitious project, where construction of the 3.7 km long (aerial distance) ropeway will take place, and which will connect the Yamunotri shrine to Kharsali village. The most interesting part of this project is that the ropeway will reduce travel time to just 10 min from five hours.
With regard to this, a social activist stated that efforts to build a ropeway started way back in 2006, for which locals of Kharsali village also gave up around 1.5 hectares to the tourism department. However, the project remained stuck in government files for more than 16 years, Surat added.
He further added that till date, priests and pilgrims are required to undergo a tough trek of 5 km, which starts from Jankichatti, to reach the shrine. That is the main reason why those not acclimatized to high-altitude conditions, elderly develop health issues on the way, and casualties have also been reported that took place during the trek. Rawat also added the ropeway will not only reduce travel time or boost tourism, but will also save lives.
Revealing more on the same, District Tourism Officer Rahul Chaubey added that with MoEF's go-ahead, construction will likely start this summer, which is scheduled to be completed in two years.
