Gujarat declares 'Ghol' as the state fish – its price can fund your Europe trip!

Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, during the two-day Global Fisheries Conference India 2023 in Ahmedabad, officially designated the Ghol fish as the state fish of Gujarat, thereby marking its significance in the marine ecosystems of Gujarat and Maharashtra.

It’s interesting to note that the Ghol fish is highly prized for both its meat and air bladder, with the latter finding applications in pharmaceuticals, whereas the meat contributes to the production of beer and wine.
The separation of the meat and air bladder allows for individualized marketing strategies, with the air bladder, in particular, being a sought-after commodity that is often exported from Mumbai.
The demand for the Ghol fish, especially its valuable air bladder, has elevated its prominence in the fisheries industry of the region. Its substantial size, averaging around one-and-a-half m, correlates directly with its market value, with prices soaring to impressive rates of up to INR 5 lakh per unit length. This economic potential presents a lucrative opportunity for skilled fishermen, who stand to earn significant annual incomes, sometimes amounting to millions.

During the conference, Central Minister Parsottam Rupala drew attention to the fact that Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh had previously designated their respective state fish through initiatives led by the Fisheries Department.
