NOAA Ocean Exploration shared a detailed blog post about this discovery. As per the blog, amid a backdrop of white sponges, a smooth, gold, dome-shaped specimen, which is slightly more than 10 cm in diameter, was firmly attached to a rock. The blog states that a small hole or tear near its base revealed a similarly colored interior.
What do the researchers have to say about this enigmatic object?
Sam Candio, an expedition coordinator at NOAA Ocean Exploration added, "Isn't the deep sea wonderfully enigmatic? Although we were able to retrieve the 'golden orb' and bring it aboard the ship, we are still unable to definitively identify it, except that it is of biological origin."
He also stated that while it's somewhat humbling to be baffled by this discovery, it serves as a reminder of how limited our knowledge is about our own planet and how much there is left to discover and appreciate about our oceans.
How are people reacting on the internet regarding the 'golden egg'?
NOAA Ocean Exploration also shared the news on social media, eliciting diverse reactions from netizens. One person on X remarked, "That appears to be an intriguing colony of something." Another speculated, "Could it be a component of a rocket?" A third simply commented, "Wow. Very interesting."
It remains unclear whether the 'golden egg' is linked to a new species or represents an unknown life stage of an existing one. Nevertheless, researchers are diligently working to uncover the mysteries surrounding it.
