As told by the Israeli Antiquities Authority to the press, a clay vessel dating back to a 1000 years was found on August 18 by teenagers volunteering for an excavation in central Israel. Reportedly, the location where the treasure has been discovered has been chosen to build a new township.
Excavation director Liat Nadav-Ziv was reported as saying that the person who would have buried this treasure box about more than 1000 years back had done so with the desire to reclaim it. He had also fixed the vessel with a nail to secure it from moving.
News has it that the place where the treasure was unearthed had workshops when the treasure was being hidden. However, the owner of the treasure is still unknown.
It is believed that the 24 carat gold coins belong to the 9th century Abbasid Caliphate period, and would have meant a lot of money during that period.
It is reportedly estimated that one can buy a luxury home in one of the topmost neighbourhoods in Fustat, the high-class capital of Egypt in those times, with the gold coins discovered recently.
