As Labour Day approaches in the United States, travellers who are looking forward to visiting a national forest in California, would be disappointed to know that chances are slim. According to reports, more than 6800 wildfires have burned 1.7 million acres of land in the state.
As of today, 18 national forests in the state of California have been shut due to the wildfires. The national forests are to remain shut until September 17, as per reports. The Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest remains open since most of it is located inside Nevada, with only a small part of it in California.
Regional Forester Jennifer Eberlien said in a statement, “We do not take this decision lightly, but this is the best choice for public safety. It is especially hard with the approaching Labor Day weekend, when so many people enjoy our national forests.”
