Palitana: First city in the world to ban non-vegetarian food

Palitana, a city in the Bhavnagar district in Gujarat, has made history by becoming the first city in the world to ban the sale and consumption of non-vegetarian food, as per the reports. This landmark decision marks a significant cultural and religious shift in the region, reflecting the strong influence of Jainism and its principles.
Reportedly, the ban in Palitana prohibits the sale and consumption of meat, as well as the butchering of animals for meat, making these actions illegal and punishable by law. This decision came after persistent protests by around 200 Jain monks, who demanded the closure of approximately 250 butcher shops in the city. Their demonstrations highlighted the religious and ethical convictions of the Jain community, for whom non-violence (ahimsa) is a central tenet of their faith.


Palitana is not just any city; it is one of the holiest pilgrimage sites for Jains, earning it the nickname "Jain Temple Town." Nestled around the Shatrunjaya Hills, the city is home to over 800 temples, with the most renowned being the Adinath Temple. These temples attract thousands of devotees and tourists annually, further emphasizing the city's spiritual significance.
If reports are to go by, following Palitana's example, other cities in Gujarat, including Rajkot, Vadodara, Junagadh, and Ahmedabad, have implemented similar regulations. In Rajkot, authorities issued orders to stop the preparation and public display of non-vegetarian food. These measures were introduced to respect the sensitivities of the populace and to prevent any negative impacts caused by the sight of meat in public spaces.

Supporters of the ban argue that public displays of meat can offend people's sensibilities and have a negative impact on society. The regulation aligns with the Jain principle of ahimsa, promoting non-violence and compassion towards all living beings.

Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel supported the regulations, noting that they also aim to reduce traffic congestion caused by the clustering of meat shops in busy areas. This dual rationale—cultural sensitivity and practical urban management—highlights the multifaceted considerations behind the ban.
