The Yoga Capital of the World, Rishikesh has been on radar of several tourists as the Uttarakhand government opened its gates for the outside world. A big chunk of the state’s revenue comes from here, mostly due to the adventure sports activities that Rishikesh is known for. Jonthom, who regularly takes tourists for rafting stated,“The past 3-4 months has seen more than 50,000 people coming for rafting. It has been a great boon since we could see our business picking up”.
The yoga festival this year was themed around “the age-old Indian practice of traditional yog, contemporary yog, therapeutic yog with discussions on celebrating ‘Shakti- the power of creation”.
Amit Rai, a software professional who drove down from Delhi, believes in taking a quick break, added “While I was booking for my stay at hostels, most of the single rooms were occupied mostly because travelers wanted to travel yet keep safe. I had to shift my dates in order to get a hostel booking. With Covid guidelines in place most cafes were not very particular about sanitizer or doing a temp check”.
There’s no doubt about the fact that Indian travellers are playing their part to boost tourism, which in turn has helped that locals to sustain their economy. Revival for tourism, surely, is bringing back lost hope.
