30 Indian Railway trains cancelled in Punjab, 11 short terminated owing to farmers’ protest in Punjab

As per ANI, Indian Railways has cancelled 30 trains and short-terminated 11 due to the ongoing farmers’ protest in Punjab. Besides, nine express trains and several festival-special trains have also been cancelled. There is no end in sight to the ongoing protests; as a result, all railway services to Punjab have been stopped for more than a month now. Even the goods trains are not able to pass through the state, which has severely affected the essentials supply in the state.


What is the protest all about?
Punjab’s farmers have been on a protest for a long time now. They are basically protesting against three agriculture laws introduced by the government:
1) The Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020
2) The Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020
3) The Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020
As of now, the farmers claim to have emptied all the railway tracks only to allow goods trains to pass. However, the Railways has said that it will either run both passengers and the goods trains or it won't run any train at all.

Recent update

The All India Kisan Sangharsh Coordination Committee (AIKSCC), an association of around 200 farmers from all over India, has called for a ‘Delhi Chalo’ protest. It has been decided that on November 26 and 27, farmers will arrive in Delhi on tractors and trolleys.
