Franz Kafka Museum

The Franz Kafka Museum is first and foremost a celebration of the life of Prague’s beloved literary son and perhaps one of the most famous writers in the world. Started in 2005, it is an exhibition that throws light on the intimate relationship that Kafka shared with Prague, the city that embraced, nurtured and moulded him and his many ideas. Photographs, publications, newspapers, audio and video clips, diaries, drawings and letters greatly help in bringing out the essence of the times he lived in. And the times were indeed tumultuous, interestingly a prominent feature of most of Kafka’s writings. Several first editions of his pieces can be found in the museum, and the shops inside offer a massive collection of biographies and all of his complete works.

The most intriguing aspect of the museum is the courtyard, which weirdly showcases a fountain consisting of two men urinating in all their glory. The flow of water traces a handful of quotes by Kafka on the surface of the water. It comes across as absurd to many, incomprehensible to some and downright surreal to certain others. If this isn’t the most brilliant representation of Kafka’s signature writing, I am not sure what is! A visit to the museum will cost you around 200CZK, and the opening hours are 10 am to 6 pm.
