Petra is a very famous archaeological site in the south-western desert of Jordan. It was the Nabatean capital and is also known as Rose city due to the pink stone it has been carved from. Why Not Shop, Petra is a Bedouin shop that sells souvenirs and refreshments to those tourists who are enthusiastic enough to walk beyond the Treasury. Most would be too tired to reach here. Do not be perturbed by the underwhelming exteriors of the shop. Inside is a charming Bedouin waiting to shower you with his warmth and smiles. He is always up for a chat and it is amazing to hear his fascinating stories about the ruins all around. There is ample sitting space outside with chairs and tables placed all over. It is just what is needed to enjoy a refreshing drink with a few snacks and then go take a look at the souvenirs on sale. Frankincense, spices, tribal jewelry, traditional crafts and rugs are the most popular things people like to buy and take back home with them. One can even buy Nabataean coins and painted pottery bowls and wall hangings from the Bedouins. This shop also works as a major landmark due to its position . It lies at the entrance to the staircase (nearly 800 stairs!) leading to the High Place of Sacrifice, which is located at the top of a mountain and is a popular site for the tourists.
So while you go visit the Treasury, which you must while you are in Petra, a visit to Why Not Shop is a must. After the long walk to the Treasury this makes for an ideal place for some much-needed refreshments. Enjoy a chat with the Bedouin and get some first hand information about the place from him. Once done, go in and take a look at the souvenirs - buy some to take a piece of Jordan home with you.
