For those shorter on time than cashWord to the wise: Be sure to agree a price with the driver before stepping onboard - fees can vary wildly. The Consorzio Motoscafi Venezia, listed below, is a reliable company to go with.
Just as a standard taxi is more expensive than a bus or subway train, so is a Venice water taxi dearer than a vaporetto. Ok - they're much dearer. But you're guaranteed to feel extremely cool when you're in one.
Water taxis can be ordered by phone, to pick you up and drop you off wherever you like. They are usually small boats, luxuriously kitted-out, with a charming driver who will always expect a hefty tip on top of the small mortgage you'll be forking out anyway. Usually hired for special occasions, or by those who've missed the scheduled 'Alilaguna' service to the airport, a ride in a water taxi can cost as much as a four course meal for two, with wine.
If you're hell bent on splashing out, though, do agree a price (and tip) in advance. Taxis can be booked online, on the 24 hour hotline, or follow the various signposts you'll see by some of the main vaporetto stations.
