Connected by a bridge to Phillip Island, Churchill Island is home to a working heritage farm and national park and is the location of the first European garden in Victoria. The 57 hectare island is supposed to have been continually farmed since the 1850s and some of the historical buildings and remnants of historical gardens now draw thousands of visitors who come to witness such animals as Clydesdale horses, Highland cattle, sheep and other baby animals. In a throwback to farm life more than a hundred years ago, visitors can watch and participate in such activities as cow milking, sheep shearing, whip cracking, working dogs and training them. Visitors can also explore the island through a handful of walking and cycling trails which are also designed to inform and educate about wetland birds and aboriginal tribes.
