The former capital of the Kakatiyas, who ruled the region between the 12th and the 14th centuries, Warangal is dotted with the remains of their fort and several temples. The massive fort is surrounded by a moat, with four gateways that lead to a central Shiva temple. The Kakatiyas were lavish patrons of art and architecture. The 12th-century Thousand Pillar Temple is an excellent example of the Chalukya-style architecture which flourished under the Kakatiyas. Located on the slopes of the Hanamkonda hill, it is dedicated to Shiva, Vishnu and Surya, and has intricately-carved pillars.
