Visit Yana Caves

When too tired of the beaches and sea, a short drive to Yana is highly recommended. Located at an hour’s drive from the beaches of Gokarna, Yana is well known for its unique rocks. The unusual twin rock formations of black crystalline limestone which are a part of the Western Ghats are absolutely spellbinding. Though there are numerous other similar rock formations nearby, these two intimidating rock outcrops are the largest and the most popular ones. A short trek through a small forest patch leads to the twin rocks, namely, Bhairaveshwara Shikhara and Mohini Shikhara. Also considered as a pilgrim place, the rocks have an opening which opens into a cave, which has numerous stalactites and stalagmites in various shapes and sizes. Spring water makes its way from the cave emerging as a tiny stream to join River Aghanashini. The cave also has a Shivalinga and a goddess statue which brings pilgrims here, especially during Mahashivarathri. Legend says that Lord Shiva once hid in these caves to save himself from a demon. Vibhuti Falls located close to Yana rocks is also quite a popular place of visit.
