Race the Cog, Mount Washington

It’s indeed difficult to imagine another ride where your train is literally in a race against runners on foot! Well, as a spectator, you will be enjoying the show, and get the easy part, while the Race the Cog participants are exerting themselves just right outside your windows. There are three waves of runners, and consequently, three separate rides. The race itself covers just 2.75 miles, whereas the challenge lies in the 3,500 ft of elevation gain, the sizable boulders along the path, and the unpredictable weather. But hey, you're on the train, so enjoy the ride!

Castaway Caboose, Durbin

The most exciting part of this train journey is that as the rest of the train departs, you're left alone in the caboose, prepared for two to four nights in the wilderness. Nestled by the Greenbrier River, you've got plenty of firewood for your campfire. Inside the caboose, the rustic exterior contrasts with modern comforts: a fridge, heater, stove, restroom, a full-sized shower, towels, a DVD player, and bedding for up to six. While cell service will be rarely available, rescue is guaranteed.
