Vienna’s underground metro system comprises of five separate lines. Ongoing work is enlarging the network, although the trains already cover the city quite extensively, as well as some of the outlying districts. The five lines are labelled numerically, but please note that there is a jump from line U4 to U6, so any attempt to find U5 will only end in frustration, as it doesn’t exists (yet). You can also identify the trains by a colour-coding system.
Tickets are available for single journeys, 24 hours or 72 hours, and vary in price, respectively. It’s also important to note that public transportation in Vienna is now integrated, so tickets bearing the VOR (Verkehrsverbund Ost-Region) mark can be used on trams and buses as well.
