Located at the base of Nanda Devi peak, in the higher ranges of the Himalayas in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand in North India this National Park was accorded a UNESCO World Heritage Site status in 1998. With unique topography, limited access to tourists and active protection this Park has some of the richest biodiversity found anywhere in the country. It supports several habitats, species and eco-systems. Amongst the animals found here, the Himalayan Musk Dear ,Mainland Serow and Snow Leopard are amongst the rarest. In 1982 trekkers were banned into the Park to protect its biodiversity and partially opened only recently for a restricted number of visitors.
