Dharamsala is the starting point for several popular treks that can be undertaken across the ridges of the Dhauladhar Range. Rising from the Kangra valley to a height 4600 metres, it makes for a stunning trail passing through thickly wooded forests of deodar, pine, oak and rhododendron, across gurgling streams and past gushing waterfalls. For those who lack the experience, there are well trained guides who can help you manoeuvre through the route. The Mountaineering Institute in Dharamkot is the place to go to make all necessary arrangements ranging from a guide and porter to maps and trekking equipment. We recommend the period between September to November, once the monsoon’s passed and the biting cold is still to set in.
