Odds are at some point in your Tokyo trip you will have to pass through the Tokyo Central Railway Station, whether arriving from the airport, when visiting the Imperial Palace or while catching a bullet train. Originally opened in 1914, it is Tokyo’s oldest train station and undeniably the most beautiful. It is also the city’s busiest train station in terms of daily train departures (over 3,000) but not when it comes to passengers—Shinjuku Station takes that honor, with nearly 4 million passengers per day, ten times more than Tokyo Station.Think of Tokyo Station as the Japanese version of Grand Central Station. Beautiful. Majestic. Busy. But the highlight of Tokyo Station is in the architecture of the Marunouchi side, the western entrance/exit that leads to the Imperial Gardens. A few years ago restorations were complete and the building now looks as it did when it first opened.
