The market gets its name from a church of Iglesia de San Miguel de los Ocotes which stood here in thirteenth-century. The market was destroyed in fire in late 18th century. It was then rebuilt in 1916, and served as an aggregate for fruits, vegetables, and meat vendors. In 2009, the market went through modern renovations, creating a thriving gourmet paradise, which you see now.
