Measures taken:
Tourism boards in several states have introduced women-only taxi services. In addition, CCTV surveillance has been increased at all the prime tourist hotspots. Not only this, the hotels too are hiring women staff in jobs related to the tourism sector. Hostels for backpackers, where people generally have to share rooms, are also planning to introduce private rooms with attached washrooms, especially for women travellers. Such hotels also are coming up with a no-alcohol policy.
1) Madhya Pradesh (MP) is planning to hire 5000 women guides, cabbies, hotel staff.
2) Uttarakhand government is training women belonging from remote areas to help female travellers visiting the state.
3) Maharashtra too is coming up with a women-centric policy to attract more female travellers.4) Karnataka has women taxi drivers.
5) Goa has a number of female cabbies to make the female tourists feel safe.
The MP tourism department had sent a proposal to make the state a safe destination for women. The state asked for a fund of INR 28 crore under the Nirbhaya scheme. It includes training 10000 women in skill development and around 40000 in self-defence.
