I have always admired the Tanjore painting for its delicate texture, usage of gold foil and intricate designs. When I had the opportunity to visit Tanjore or Thanjavur as the city is known, I was naturally excited to experience its rich cultural heritage first-hand and I must admit, I was not disappointed. Tanjore, known as the ‘Rice Bowl of Tamil Nadu’ due to the extensive paddy cultivation, was the cultural capital of the country in 1790. The Cholas, Nayaks and Marathas have shaped this city into a hub of architecture, art and culture. And this has stood the testimony of time in the numerous buildings and temples that dot the city. And if you want to see this for yourself, make sure that the following things to do in Thanjavur are part of your itinerary.
