One of the best ways to get a brief but dramatic narration of Zagreb’s history is to opt for the interactive theatre night tour, called the Secrets of Gric. Organised and conducted superbly, the tour is led by an actress dressed up in the garb of the famous Croatian novelist Marija Juric Zagorka, whose fictitious characters are set against the actual local history. Salient events are enacted by costumed characters and visitors follow her through the dark streets holding lanterns. The drama, production and the unexpected encounters with theatrical commentary by the protagonist are fascinating, and an interesting way of understanding the city’s history. Be prepared to encounter ghosts, medieval night watchmen, knights on white horses in shining armour, princesses and damsels in distress, witches and other colourful characters.
