Glide down the Avon River on a punt, meander through the iconic Botanic Gardens, and expand your mind at the Antarctic Centre or Christchurch Museum. It’s also a great place to take to the skies; it doesn’t get much more scenic—or serene—than a hot air balloon flight over the Canterbury Plains. From here you can pop over to the seaside resort town of Akaroa, book a wine-tasting tour of surrounding vineyards, or board the TranzAlpine Express that will take you across to Greymouth on the west coast.
