An unique insight into Norwegian art history

Word to the wise: Make sure you stop off for a hot chocolate in the Gallery's café, whose beautiful stucco marble walls and plaster casts were a gift from the French State in 1924.
Founded in 1837, Oslo's National Gallery houses an unparalleled collection of paintings, sculptures, prints and drawings tracing the development of Norwegian art.
The focus is on the 19th century but works from antiquity to the mid-20th century are on display, covering all major periods. International art – particularly French impressionism – is also well represented, thanks to numerous bequests from private collections.
Unlike other major museums, the Gallery is compact enough to cover in an afternoon. Highlights include major works by Edvard Munch, including a version of 'The Scream', and paintings by Gauguin, Cézanne, Picasso and El Greco.
