A cavernous space which one housed a power station, the Tate Museum displays some of the most spectacular and shocking (Damien Hirst) exhibitions in modern art. The Tate is an institution that holds the United Kingdom's national collection of British Art, and International Modern and Contemporary Art. The gallery was founded in 1897, as the National Gallery of British Art and re-christened as the Tate Gallery in 1932 when its role was expanded to include the national collection of Modern Art and the national collection of British art, in 1932, it was renamed the Tate Gallery. It’s named after sugar magnate Henry Tate of Tate & Lyle, who laid the foundations for the collection.
