There’s much more to explore in Venice than just the main island. Taking a day trip to the outlying islands around the Venetian Lagoon is a great way to escape the crowds and see another side to Venice. There are many attractions to explore on the islands. In Murano you can see how the famous and exquisite Murano glass is crafted and you can also even create your own personal perfume. Burano island is a delight with its brightly coloured houses and intricate lace making traditions. On Torcello and Murano islands, you can see marvelous Byzantine mosaics and pavements, while on San Giorgio Maggiore Island you can enjoy Renaissance architecture and art. The cemetery island of Saint Michelle is also worth a stop and don’t miss the beautiful sunsets from Sant’Erasmo Island. You can also often find souvenirs and gifts can be purchased way cheaper on the surrounding islands than in Venice so don’t forget to bring your purse!
