Japan is a mecca of sorts for all stationery lovers. Home to some quirky office supplies along with writing instruments that guarantee all the precision in the world, the country constantly works on perfecting its products. In fact, some of the most popular brands of pens come from Japan—Pilot and UniBall anyone? Expect to spend a major part of your cash on pretty notebooks, sturdy journals, handmade paper, cards, sketchbooks and art supplies. Tokyo, interestingly is the best place to shop for these beauties as stationery stores dot all neighbourhoods and big supermarkets have elaborate sections dedicated to the same. The Japanese most definitely believe that the pen is mightier than the sword.A foldable fan often evokes images of a mysterious and charming Geisha perched upon a Tatami mat with all the grace in the world, fanning herself slowly while remaining perfectly coy. And stemming from this imagery is the fact that the aforementioned handheld fans have been around in Japan for centuries. Usually made out of bamboo and sometimes silk, these have intricate designs of flowers and leaves painted on them and now make for brilliant souvenirs as they encapsulate the history and culture of the country in many unique ways. Souvenir shops dotting Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and other major cities usually have the prettiest fans. A reasonable price, however, cannot be guaranteed.
