It’s difficult to traverse even a few metres in Zagreb without encountering one of the city’s iconic souvenirs—a plump, shiny, red marzipan heart, usually hung on a delicate multi-coloured thread. But that’s not all. All over the city, there are tiny little souvenir shops displaying a variety of souvenirs and knick-knacks that are symbols of the city. Apart from the marzipan hearts and the ubiquitous fridge magnets, things to look for include bright red umbrellas, ties and tiny glass vials painted with bright red and gold dots. There is also a range of fruit brandies that you can buy here, such as Rakia and Slivovitz, both local traditional varieties.
