A shining gem of the Central Business District of Johannesburg, the Johannesburg Art Gallery houses some of the best historical art in the city. Designed by the British architect Edward Lutyens, it has some excellent Dutch paintings from the 17th century, European art from the 18th and 19th centuries and South African artworks from the 20th and 21st centuries. This vast collection was acquired by Florence Philips, who was the wife of Sir Lionel Philips, an eminent tycoon of South Africa. The museum has a whopping 9000 works of art that are spread across 15 exhibition halls. The gallery is, in fact, one of the biggest in the African continent. Moreover, there are some beautiful gardens on the premises that house the best sculptures you will ever see. The most popular names amongst the displays include Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali, Claude Monet and Henry Moore.
