I am sure you have heard of supersonic aircrafts, and that’s simply because they have been around for decades. Only they have not been permitted for use as commercial aircrafts. Reason? Well, as far as the United States is concerned, it doesn’t allow these flights over land because of the ear-shattering sonic booms that come with them.
they will be able to cut down on travel time by huge margins.
While most of you would be worried about whether that kind of travel will ever be a reality, Lockheed Martin, a US-based aerospace giant is working on to make it a reality.
How, you ask? With millions of dollars of support from NASA, the company is building the X-plane, a supersonic aircraft, which will cruise the skies at an altitude of 55,000 ft, and that too at a top speed of 1,593 kmph, which is faster than the speed of sound. What will make it suitable for passenger travel is the fact that the booming sound of supersonic aircrafts will be reduced to nothing more than an audible thumb in the case of the X-plane.
The work of building this aircraft has begun recently and is expected to be completed by the end of 2021.
Jaiwon Shin, NASA associate administrator said, “Our long tradition of solving the technical barriers of supersonic flight to benefit everyone continues”.
If you can’t wait to board this aircraft, know that the X-plane will be flown four to six cities in the United States by mid-2022.
