Of course you can go to one of the modern new movie theaters that dot the city in large, air-conditioned shopping complexes but, while they may be big and comfortable, they certainly don’t have the character you’ll find at Scala Cinema in the heart of the Siam neighborhood. Built in 1967, this one-screen movie theater will transport you back in time with its charming retro feel. Once inside, you’ll be welcomed by the familiar smell of popcorn, a giant chandelier and well-preserved architecture before making your way to the single large theater which holds nearly 1,000 red velvet seats. The films here vary from new Hollywood blockbusters, to internationally acclaimed independent films and local showings so check often for current listings. Situated across the street from the famous Siam Square shopping center, the theater is one of the last old movie theaters in the city and certainly the most picturesque still with a subtle air of elegance to it. At just 100 baht a ticket, the theater’s design and architecture aren’t the only things frozen in time and you’ll be able to enjoy a film and unique atmosphere without spending a fortune.
