Before American Jim Thompson revitalised the Thai silk industry, he laid the groundwork for touristic travel to Bangkok. After World War II ended, the former soldier returned to Thailand convinced that Westerners would come to the city if there was a proper hotel. So he took a gamble and revamped the Oriental Hotel—a former palace overlooking the Chao Phraya River. True to his vision, the hotel attracted many travellers including such famous names as Noel Coward, Charlie Chaplin, and Somerset Maugham.
For his next mission, Thompson took on the failing silk industry. With a natural flair for colour and design, the trained architect saved a dying craft and transformed it into a world-renowned industry. In doing so, he prompted the creation of silk companies all over the city. Now, his lovely teak house is a museum, with all the furniture and artwork in the same place as they were in 1967.
