San Carlo Theater

With 2900 seats, San Carlo is one of the largest theatres in Europe. It is located on the East side of the Piazza Trieste e Trento, the city’s busiest traffic intersection. Galleria Umberto, a shopping arcade that was built in 1887-90, is located nearby. The theater has a quirky history attached to it. Standing magnificently next to the Plebiscito Square, it was designed by the architect Giovanni Antonio Medrano, a Spanish brigadier. It was built for King Charles’ birthday in 1737, and that too very expeditiously. Sporting a Neo-Classical style, this building is one of the largest opera houses in Italy and has amazing acoustics. On the downside, it is also known for attracting the noisiest audiences in Italy. Since the original construction, it has been rebuilt several times.

The theatre also conducts guided tours from Monday to Saturday, in any language that the tourists may request. It doesn’t end here though. The tour also includes a visit to the MeMUS, the Multimedia Museum of Teatro San Carlo.
