Reasons you must head to Tawang this summer

Bored with holidaying at the same old hill stations of Himachal and Uttarakhand? Well, it’s time that you look beyond and book your tickets for the supremely gorgeous Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh. Located at an elevation of 10,000 ft above sea level, this mountain town is amongst the untouched and lesser-explored hilly terrains of the country.

Tucked in the lap of the mighty Himalayas, Tawang is dotted with ancient monasteries and is truly a paradise for nature lovers. Tawang Monastery

Do you know that Tawang Monastery is the largest monastery in India and second largest in Asia, right after the Potala Palace in Tibet? This monastery was established in the 17th century, and is one of the prime centres for learning Buddhism. The monastery abounds with young monks, who stay and learn about the Buddhist culture here as a part of their training. Here, you can also go through the fascinating collection of old Buddhist manuscripts.

Sela Pass


Sela Pass is one of the best places to visit in Tawang; it also holds credit for being one of the few motorable high-altitude mountain passes in the world. You’ll simply fall in love with the views here, just spectacular! The winters here are super amazing, when Sela Pass gets all covered in white snow. On your way to the pass, you’ll come across Paradise Lake, which remains frozen for most of the time in winters. The entire place looks surreal as sunrays kiss mountains, turning everything golden.
Nuranang Waterfalls

Set between Tawang and Bomdila, Nuranang Waterfalls or Jang Fall, is a sight to behold! This stunning waterfall is known for rainbow trout fishing and its absolutely chilling water. Some 100 m high, this waterfall is still unknown to world, a reason that makes it even more worth travelling for!

Taktsang Gompa

Around 50 km from Tawang, there is the beautiful Taktsang (Kirti) Gompa, which is believed to have been visited by Guru Padmasambhava in the 8th century. The stunning views that you get from here can’t be described in words! It’s a place where you can sit for hours, doing nothing. The peace and silence that surrounds the entire region is absolutely overwhelming.
