An age-old Spanish classic – completed in 1764, after a period of 26 years, the Royal Palace of Madrid is one of the largest royal residences in Europe. The Neo Classical square layout of the palace contains more than 3000 lavishly decorated rooms. The Spanish Royals lived here until 1931, before moving into the Zarzuela Palace, outside Madrid. The palace now is used for official banquets and state receptions. A large Plaza de la Armería welcomes the visitors at the entrance. Grand Staircase designed by Sabattini, Royal Library, Royal Pharmacy, Armory Room, King and Queen’s royal apartments, Hall of Mirrors, and the crown room, are some of the highlights inside the palace. The palace contains artworks by well known artists such as Velázquez, Goya, Rubens, El Greco, and Caravaggio, besides rich tapestry, furniture, porcelain, and chandeliers. Campo Del Moro and Sabatini Gardens are other attractions worth checking out. Walk through the Plaza de Oriente and admire the beauty of the Central Gardens. The statues of kings and queens lining up the plaza will enrich your knowledge of the history of Spanish Royalty.
