Place des Vosges is also known as the Place Royale. It is one of the oldest squares in the city of Paris. Place des Vosges was built to recognise a certain area of Vosges which was the first to pay the taxes imposed by the government. Now it consists of classic structures of 17th century France. This place has its own unique history. The statue of King Louis XIII was destroyed during the fall of the monarchy in the 16th century and it was not until the 20th century that it was rebuilt again. Situated here is the museum of Victor Hugo, the writer of the most wonderful book Les Misérables. It is open on all days of the week except Mondays.
