Istanbul Modern

Officially known as the Istanbul Museum of Modern Art, Istanbul Modern is the city’s premiere art gallery. It is popular not only with tourists but locals as well, from children all the way up to old people.
The main hall of Istanbul Modern houses the permanent collection, an amazing treasure trove focusing on Turkish artists, and the progression of regional artistic styles from modern to contemporary. The gallery also features several temporary exhibits at any given time, each of which is continually replaced by newer exhibits on a regular basis. Compared to the permanent collection, these exhibitions tend to offer a broader range of artwork and topics, including sculptures, cinema, and foreign artists.

Get Cultured: Unless fluent in Turkish, visitors will need a guide, either audio or human – to make the most of the art gallery. I paid 15 TL for an audio guide but unfortunately it went into more detail about the artist than the artwork, which was rather disappointing. If visiting as a group, definitely go with a tour guide. At least then you can ask questions.
